This is true...and has me puzzled too.

The 1985 Capri brochure does show the sport dash but with a non-sport seat.....I always thought that was odd too:

I suppose it sould be a picture from a 1984 (or a manufactured image).

Such controvercy over a simple car...I LOVE IT!

If you look at the dealership brochures (pictures, std equip. and options list) along with the production line worker list of '86 5.0(RS)/GS differences ('85s and '86s are pretty much identical) stated in a message Sandy posted on www.foureyedpride.com that I referenced in one of my posts there, you will find this car is wholly probable and not a hack job.

The only items that have been "hacked" are the crappy exterior color change, incorrect hatch, wheels and radio installed by the owner before me.

Options included on this GS are the CFI H.O. V8/auto/3:27:1 locking rear diff, AC, power group (windows, door, and power remote release), and electronic digital search radio. Options that were not selected were the two-tone paint, aluminum alloy wheels, and T-top or sunroof. I can't remember if the tilt/cruise were std. or optional, but chekcing the dealership brochure again would tell.

Previous items being argued about that have been substanciated:
seats and upholstery - early '85 production items from left over from the '84s
dual tip single exhaust system - same as seat and upholstery
grey dash panels - check the brochures and production line RS/GS differences, they're standard on the GS. Did the grey dash panels replace the woodgrain units on the GSs in '85/'86, or on all bubblebacks from '83-up?
black headlight buckets - same argument as dash panels
chrome window and door trim - standard on the GS
V8/auto/3.27:1 locking rear diff - all options on a GS in '85

And as far as the long standing 5.0(RS)/GS debate, here's my take on it:
All of the cars folks are claiming to be GSs, that for all other intents and purposeses are 5.0s(RSs) with a single GS badge on the rear hatch are, in my opinion, exactly that and are just interesting production line mistakes. These cars all have the RS buck tag, the RS equipment, etc., etc., but have a single GS badge on the hatch...that's it.

Let me pose this question:
How simple would it be for a single production line worker, disgruntled, sleepy, careless, or otherwise, to continue to pick a single GS badge out of a bin and stick on the rear hatch and have it go unnoticed? My feeling is this is pretty likely. Let me ask now how likely it would be for a car that has been labled a GS from the start with no RS special equipment, that contains all of the correct standard GS equipment and an interesting list of factory GS options, to be a real GS? Again, pretty likely.

Here are some pictures for your scrutiny. Let the debate continue!

One thing that was posted back when we were looking into this car was something Sandy wrote up on how to build the 86 GS and 5.0L (RS) cars.

For the 5.0L he stated:
RS (5.0L) Build (1986)
...
REAR
Delete "GS" letters on 3rd door
I wonder....was this pulled directly from Ford literature? I assumed that it was to mean that the GS tag was not added to begin with. However, I suppose it leaves a possible interpretation that the "GS" tag had to be removed (deleted) for a 5.0L/RS?

That would be just silly for them to have to do at the factory.

I think Sandy's note about how dealer's had to order the car probably has something to do with it. From what he said, all Capris were ordered the same way. The only difference was a check box on the order sheet to choose the RS option.

I would love to see one of the sheets.

In any case there appears to be alot of weirdness to the 85 builds. Even without the "GS" tags, chrome/black interior power window and door lock bezels seem to be all over the place too.

Exactly. Delete may have meant "take it off" or "don't stick it on". Maybe the person who was in charge of the GS emblem didn't get the memo, or didn't pay attention to such a small detail?

Assembly line goofs are possible and are done.

Just like Mustangs/Capris receiving either or both of the chrome/black power window and door lock switches and bezels, I've seen Cobras with the Mystic Clearcoat Metallic paint receive one Mystic exterior door handle and one Black exterior door handle. There have also been instances of Cobras bound for the U.S. market receiveing kph speedometers instead of mph. These are oddities or "production variations" associated with humans on a production line that could either be considered "mistakes" or items of interest that make a car more "collectable" in the future.

It just seemed odd to me that it was mentioned in the build specs for the 5.0L at all.

Delete typically means to leave off a standard item that is usually included in a packaged trim level. By 84 the am/fm radio was standard (free) but it could be deleted for credit. This would leave the radio area with a blank off panel. I don't recall too many other options except maybe a spoiler that could be deleted from a package. I don't know the Capri option list but I am familar with the mustang side of things. Typically if the mustang has 3 trim levels, the Capri would have only the top 2 trim levels as they came with more standard options.

I'm still trying to figure out the DSO of "51". In earlier Ford production (ex: late 60s-early 70s Mustangs) "51" was the Denver DSO, but in all of the reference books I have and the online decoders I've seen, it seems to be a non-existant code for '80s Mustangs/Capris. I also have an '81 Capri RS with the same "51" DSO.

Anybody have any ideas?

i was actually refering to chrome molding on the exterior of the car. the windshield chrome strips & hatch trim are usually gray on any 5.0 model capri in 1985. same with the grill, exterior door handles & other exterior items. whats grey on 5.0 is usually chrome on v-6 & I-4 models.
& as far as the rs moulding, they werent dropped until the end of 1985 production in the us. i had a RS that was built in march 85 that had throttlebody fuel injection & AOD trans. it had the rs quarter moldings & also dual exhaust (1 pipe extention on each side). in canada the rs mouldings were continued in 1986.
the point i was trying to make earlier was that every 5.0 capri that was built in 1985 that i have seen (& i have seen alot in & around the motorcity!), whether they are GS or RS, always had the sport package trim (grey exterior trim moldings, grill, airdam....) & always had the Sport package interior as well.

by the way, I still have the 1985 RS quarter mouldings in great shape.
the rs i had was totaled by an ass@*#% & i stripped the car of all i could.

i would be willing to part with the mouldings if the price is right (hint, hint).

I agree with you to a point.

Yes, in 1985 ALL Capris with V8s and an AOD had the CFI H.O. 5.0L V8.

I believe the RS quarter trim was continued into '85. A look at the 1985 dealership brochures list it as a "Capri RS" while the '86 brochures list it as a "Capri 5.0L". I also believe '85 was probably a transition year where the RS quarter trim was phased out late in the production run before they became the "Capri 5.0L" in '86.

My car is not an "RS" or a "5.0L". It is a GS with the 5.0L H.O. V8 and AOD as options. My buck tag does not have the CRS stamped in it that indicated the RS model.

Yes, the dark grey window/door/hatch trim was put on the RS(5.0L) model.

Yes, the chrome trim was used on the GS, but was it was not specifically reserved for 4 or 6 cyl models (all still GSs).

In all of the documented cases I've seen so far, every one of the cars labled as a GS, by the means of a "GS" badge on the hatch, that also had the sport interior, body and trim components specifically used on the RS(5.0L) models, are actually RS(5.0L)s that have been misbadged on the hatch as a GS. In each case the car had a buck tag stamped with "CRS" indicating it was, in fact, built as an RS(5.0L) and NOT as a GS.

Yes, so was I.

I still find this hard to believe. There would be alot more 85 RS/5.0L cars with them still attached. Virtually none of the 85 "5.0L" cars that show up on FEP or Ebay have them save for the Canadian cars. It was mentioned by somebody that there was a bulletin to replace those mouldings at the dealers. I have no idea if that was true either.[/quote]

Toss the mouldings on ebay for $1. They should go for $75-150 for the pair depending on who's buying. The last pair I saw went for $75 with a "Buy It Now" option. Everyone was bitching at how cheap those went.

I guess this is called "Stirring the pot" ~

1986:-

For model-year 1986, the RS changed at mid-year to become the 5.0 (as in "Mustang"). I have an early edition (print date 8/85) Capri brochure showing & describing the RS. On the side mid-body-side moulding between the door's opening & the rear wheel opening cutout stamped into the small rubber moulding thatis affixed to the quarter panel is "RS" ~ it appears to be resceessed & filled with a dull silver-like paint. Then, I have a transistional 8x11 inch post-card type flyer, using the same picture as aforementioned, taken from the brochure, however airbrushed out is that "RS" and in its place is a recessed " 5.0 " ~ however not dull silver paint filled. Lastly, a revised (sadly in poor condition) 1986 brochure (print date 1/86) with the revised picture. In THAT brochure, whereever it had formerly had or said "RS" was now 5.0, ~HOWEVER~ the GS was listed as still offering the availalabilty of ordering the 5.0L engine! That was simply called a Capri GS. In that configuration, the engine was seemingly thought of as an OPTION, and they didn't include the engine in the car's nomenclature, much as they didn't make mention of the type of transmission or whether or not the car had power lock group.
This is waaay past confusing to an assembly line worker as to what emblems to put on a particular car. The major differance between the two (a RS) and a (GS ordered with the eight cyl. engine) seemingly was the seat type.
By far, the rarest of the breed would be a GS V-8. However, the ONLY reason to order such would be as a SOLD car, to a customer who:-

1. Hated the Sport Seats in the RS -or-
2. Wanted a paint color not available on the RS

Otherwise, the price differance was under $400.00, less than 3% of the car's MSRLP

I would love to see those brochures!

My 1986 brochure doesn't show the RS mouldings and it has a print date of 8/85 too....

I think I know this picture you speak of. In the 1986 brochure it is the guy sticking his head out of the red car? I have seen this same picture in a brochure that was on Ebay that I passed on....I guess I should have gotten it because the car was magically silver instead of red.

Looking through all the brochures its apparent that there was a fair amount of air brushing going on from year to year.
