Auto shifter

Anyone know how to get the automatic shifter T-handle off? It's leather wrapped and I don't see and set screws. If nothing else I need to tighten it up.

Anyone come up with sources for the rubber gasket around the handle? Ford obsoleted the gasket and replaced it with the whole shifter assembly $100 and then obsoleted that.

Well I finally broke down and read the manual. It says to yank it off. FYI Keep the button covered and watch for the spring.

Mine seem loose (twists) but no way to tighten it. I think I will add a set screw to the side facing the radio. Like the 65-73 models.

I assume this is the part in reference. I have seen him list these on Ebay since the original post and believe he still has some in stock.

I did a search and it seems the NOS ones melt to goo in the sealed package. Rather than spending $25, I used the earlier one 68 I think. Costs $3.95 in repro. 69-70 ones are too long. Yes it was a bit short. I just made a sheet metal tab to hold it in place. It's long enough to seal and cover the opening. It is a bit thick and the shifter can be slightly stiff. Hey for $4 it's better than what I had.

Are the $25 ones repro? Or NOS?

I am not an authority on NOS or much of anything else for that matter. It
fits and looks great compared to the chewed up melted rubber one I removed.
It had the thin metal framing imbedded within the rubber to hold shape
and secure. It was a perfect fit. I have seen him advertize this part for $30 and
more on Ebay, but also think he has listed it a couple of times for less than $25.

I think he found stash of service replacement parts. I think he told me Ford knew about this problem and did make some service replacement parts at one time. Technically I guess they would be NOS...they are still fairly old but hopefully made better.

I think any and all, replacement or otherwise have been discontinued by ford.

LOL... I found out how it comes off while driving. The button and spring flew out of car while my hand was left holding the T-handle. Suprising for sure..
