Sandy,
To simplify the VIN assignment process as it has been explained to me, by a couple different OE manufactures is: They assign VIN's, then schedule the cars to be built. So lets say, ASCMclaren ordered 25 cars based on what they expected demand would be, Ford would then assign the cars to be built VIN's( in this case it would be incomplete vehicle VIN's), then schedule them to be built. Well, lets say, the sales of ASC Mclaren's goes through the roof, they need another 25 cars now!, so Ford goes through and changes the way 25 cars that are already scheduled to be built, and are already assigned VIN's, to the way ASC Mclarens are to be built. They retain the VIN's that were already assigned to them. Much like the in-plant change on your Cadillac with the black interior. There are several other factors also, but this is the simple version. So to answer your final question, There would be no differences.
