ascMcLaren Storytime !

Post by Sandy »

In 1988, asc received 2 special requests. Sadly neither person has ever contacted me, but the fact is, that these cars exist (or existed!).

#1. It was in New England, possibly Mass., I kinda think. A college there wanted a "mascot" car. Purpose was to bring dignataries out to center stage, at special events, as well as the Homecoming Queen and the Football coaches, and the College President and and and....you get the idea. They wanted the colors of America. The car was painted Keweenau White, with the Scarlet Interior and the Atlantic Blue (navy) roof ! Yeech.

#2. #2 MAY have been a 1989......
Regardless, it was ordered by the owner of a bowling alley or 2 or 3. :D
He wanted the car to lOOk like a Bowling Shoe. The car got the name, while up at the factory of the "Shoe Car".
Ordered in ascMcLaren Red with Scarlet interior and a Black Roof, the owner had the hood, grille area, and front fascia painted black, as well as the deck lid, the rear license cove, and the rear fascia. Then had the 2 connected, via a 2" painted black strip from the side view mirrors, back along the top of the doors (by that plastic moulding) to the edge of the tonneau cover, and up & onto the deck lid. Shoo Car.

#3 is very pretty ! A Ford DEALER (Who shall remain un-named) wanted to take advantage of the $809.00 option of "Special Order Color Paint". He chose 1977 Truimph "British Racing Green" and mated it with the Sand Beige interior on a 1989 ascMcLaren with the Tan roof, the brushed silver wheels, with (of course) the Gold pockets, and filled the indentation in the front & rear fascias as well as the bodyside moulding with a gold metallic tape stripe. The car has low low mileage and last I heard was showroom fresh.

Stop making crap up! No way did somebody do #2, and no way is anyone going to believe you!

:D :D :D

Sandy, you have the vins, have someone run the shoe car and see which state it was in last. That must be an absolute horror to behold. :D

It's the truth ! I wish someone at the plant had taken a pic for me! The black paint, (by the way, I forgot to say that it was FLAT black, as in your wiper arms, went fender peak to fender peak, and by the windshield frame, (the one that cracks) well, at the bottom, where it meets the car's body, the black curved around to meet the door's top, by where the window goes down into the door, and then the black went rearward....about 1" ABOVE the door handle, all along the side. When it got to the tonneau cover, you'll note the the side of the tonneau is very flat (where it meets the body), THAT was also black and then it sorta curved around & up onto the deck lid, rear spoiler and the area that would house the license plate (recessed) This was all flat black. The roof was black. The "A" pillars were ascMcLaren Red. The sides were red. The interior was red.

The Green car is extremely good looking. Tan over BRG with Tan interior, gold pocket wheels (stock-1989-1990) and gold stripe.

I had heard that the college McLaren was traded in - in 1996 and that the thing needed a new roof & a black one was installed, making her then white withred interior & a black top.

Shoo car IS out there. BUT, I do not know what its VIN is !

Those stories are really interesting. I'd bet there are more like that.

#1 - For starters that would be a very hard to look at car. I've not ever been a white car fan, and I"m even less a red interior fan. Great story though.

#2 - You've got to be kidding me. I believe it though. I would have loved to have seen it. Someone has to have a picture of this. I would bet that since then, whoever owns this car, they've repainted it.

#3 - This is a great color combination, love to see it on a mustang. It looks great on British cars. I'm just not sure of the gold metallic tape stripes, I've never been a fan of those either, but I'd hold the verdict until I saw it.

I would love to see some of the rarer colors of Mclarens out there. Through the years when I've traveled to different cities/areas I'd always end up seeing a Mclaren somehow but they'd always be white, red, black.....I'd really like to see in person, that british racing green, the coral, paris blue and some of the other rare ones.

I know of a guy who lives on the north coast of Ohio. He owned 3 Mclarens at one time, 2 capris and one mustang. They were an '85 convertible, '86 convertible, & a '87. The '87 was red with red interior, and a black top. He bought this car for his daughter when she turned 16 in '87 (I know, what a car for a 16 yr. old). He drove the '86 often himself in the summer time and took care of it. The story on his '85 supposedly is that it was the ASC show car in Japan where ASC had a display set up, he said he never drives it. This was told to me probably 15 yrs. ago. so who knows if he still owns them.

Mike, re-read. I believe that shelbyscarab states that all 3 were convertibles !!

Shelby... 95% of the time, the college McLaren's top was down, so the dark blue roof was very seldom seen. 99% of the student body only saw a white car with red interior. It was used in nice weather, at college affairs to drive "special people" onto the field to the podium to speak. The top was only in the raised posistion IF the event was held in the rain.

Regarding photos, my contact indicated that he doesn't recall any, (this pertaining to the Shoo car).

#3 car, pertaining to the stripeS - no, not stripeS, a single 1/4 inch tape stripe, as I have on my 1990, shown below. This was an actual 1990 (0nly) ascMcLaren option ~ "New-For-1990" at $49.00. It was available in Silver Metallic (mine); or Gold Metallic. Yes, his car is a 1989, but he had it added. I think it's the only non-90 to be so equipped that way!

You can see it here, in the Silver Metallic, on my car.

Well, he seems to say that the "McLaren package" included the graphics...which is untrue....but who knows where they actually got put on the car.

Probably a search of that Jack Edwards guy who signed it might yield a clue. My guess is the original owner put it on....but it could have been some kind of promotion by asc or the Jack Edwards guy or something....weirder things happen.

The paint COLOR, "Candy Red Metallic" is real ! Few were made. The graphics are not original. Maybe a prior owner told him that it came that way from ascMcLaren....so he stills believes it.

How many to be exact Sandy? Oh and btw I got an email from Ebay asking me if this person ever contacted me outside of Ebay about a transaction. The answer is no, I did how ever ask him about the reserve on this car while the auction was open and it was posted on his add.

What's everyone's opinion on one of his answers to questions. "The high end value now is $18,000, and after it turns 20 the projected value should be $100,000".

Uh, I don't know about that. I think they're worth a little more than what they've been selling for on EBAY, after 20 yrs I'm thinking more like 20-40gs.......

Nice looking car, rare color is cool. However what possessed someone to paint the 3" wide body molding trim black all the way around it??!?!?!?!

.......my 2 cents.....

The only way these cars will ever break the $20,000 mark is if SERIOUS (read: well heeled) collector/investor-types get turned on to them, and and and if so, they want original, non modified, out of the box cars. Unless THAT happens, these cars will never break $25,000 ceiling. However, IF IF IF it does happen, then ultra low mileage, mint, documented, originals might go to the mid-forties, as in $45,000.

$100,000, I would not even address. That's plain nuts.

Green Mclaren

Post by m81mclaren »

I saw a local Green Mclaren about 2 years ago here in Northern CA after seeing the gold tape stripes and hideous huge bling rims. Could this have been the special BRG paint car you mentioned. I'll check if I saved any pics from this but doubt it.
