The harness should be there behind the panel and would make an ideal point to connect a new power option for ASC since it would be a rather large wire.

That would make at least six different heater control panels (non a/c-no defrost, a/c- no defrost, non a/c- defrost, non a/c- defrost, dealer add a/c-defrost, dealer add a/c- no defrost). I saw one for that last one on ebay recently.
The one that came with my car had been replaced somewhere along the way. (it had '82 Fairmont' on the back in junkyard crayon). I got one from an 85 Mustang hatch w/ a/c no rear defrost.

HVAC panels are a major bad spot on these cars. They break all the time. I had to replace mine back in 1993 after having the car for 1 year.

I got a NOS in the box if ever I need to change it again.

#1 culprit....sticky HVAC vent cable. I kept pushing on mine harder and hard as the time went by until the unit broke. Keep that cable and heater box vent LUBED!

Yeah, I pull every good one that I find in the yards. I have a good supply of them along with the cable.

My previous statement was incorrect. The 85 brochure states the rear defrost was standard equipment. This makes finding a defrost delete panel harder to find. Grab one when you can.

It was still an option for Mustangs though until 86 wasn't it? Capris got that rear defrost standard in 84 or 85.

Yes, that is somewhat true. Per the option book, the SVO was standard and it was required in NY. Of course no verts ASC or Mustang had it.

The little price book the sales people carried around comes in handy. I wish I had more for the other years.

Yes that's it

Yes that's the little book I was speaking of. I have one for the 85 mustang and it's the only one I've seen since buying a car back then. I guess I should look at the info on the site more often. No wonder you guys are so knowledgeable.

You can thank Sandy for those. He hunted down an entire set and got them copied and sent.

Does the MustangGT.org web site have them? I know they recently put all the 82-86 Mustang Product Fact Books up there.

The product facts books are great, until November. Sadly, round about November-December timeframe substitutions, additions, exclusions and revisions arrive from thr parent company. Every dealership I ever worked in, I saw to it that each person recieved and entered them in their persoanl books. However, many places I worked at, we never got them because the general manager tossed them out as "junk". Therefore the Salesmen's guides are waay better, as when they arrive in thr mail, somebody has to sign for them, and they don't look like junk. The moment there are alterations, either NEW books come or gummed pages to peel & stick over exsisting pages. (Which they all did, except Sandy, of course, who put it in with a pair of paper clips, so I could still "see" what was altered and/or changed.) "DUH" :P

Back to the original question

Post by KHummel66 »

I know this thread took several different turns since my first question, and as I've been out of town for a couple weeks, I haven't been able to ask a follow up question.

Mustang Marty refers to the second limit switch being connected to the pull down motor. My '85 vert doesn't have a pull down motor. The #5 bow latch is stricly mechanical and incorporated into the tonneau hinge system, and it doesn't appear there ever was a motor involved.

So, this begs a couple questions: Were some '85s produced without the pull down motor? If so, is the second limit switch located elsewhere or is it also non-existent?

Thanks,

Keith
