I have never even seen the radio delete plate for the dash, so I have never seen what was in the back. Dummy speaker grilles would be pretty......ah.....Dumb. :smash:

Need access to a 1986 PARTS book, to look it up & see if there are 2 #s and any wording such as:

With Radio
Without Radio

and two different #s

On the radio delete option, in the mustang world the radio was deleted for the SVO Competion Prep Option ($1300 credit) of which they built 89 cars from 84 to 86. As you would expect it could be deleted by it's self for a credit of $134. The radio plate is talked about all the time but I never heard anyone mention anything but the standard speaker grills. I've looked at several of these Comp Prep cars over the years and never noticed a different speaker grill or lack of. I'll ask around over at the other sites and see what they have to say. It's very possible there were some left over panels from the earlier years when the radio was not standard included equipment thus no cut out. 84 and up was standard to have an AM/FM radio. I also have a copy of the radio installation manual from Ford for 84. I'll take a look in it to see if there is any mention of the speaker info there.

svo413, yes, that SVO radio delete plate is what I have seen.

I have not seen a "speaker" delete plate for an SVO.....that is why I was thinking there never was one.

Not necessarily. If Ford made ALL of them without speaker cutouts and made the cutouts at the factory, then there would possibly be only one part number.

On the one red and one grey panel that came out of parts cars, the speaker openings are cut (I just checked) not moulded with the part. The cut is very clean so it looks like the opening was pressed out by a big speaker sized "cookie cutter". Unlike the other moulded edges of the panel, the speaker opening has that telltale score markings and "flashing" around the edges indicative of being cut.

If you looked in a parts book, you may find just one part number and it is up to you to cut the correct speaker hole.

I did looked in the lame insurance part lists I have just to see and they list just one part number for right and one for left....

I located my 1984 Ford Sound System Catalog. It doesn't mention specifically about making any cut outs for any model car. It does mention that any Mustang or Capri with any radio (even AM), came with rear speaker wiring. Radio delete cars did not have rear speaker wiring. There were several kits lists to install a MTR radio (ETR not available in these cars) in the Mustang and Capri.

Stereo Conversion Kit E3ZZ-18814-A lists (PARTIAL LISTING)
E2ZF-18971-AA SPEAKER 5.5X7.5 QTY. 2
E1EF-18978-AWA SPEAKER GRILL PAINT TO MATCH QTY. 2
E2DF-18978-AA SPEAKER GRILL PAINT TO MATCH QTY. 2
E2AF-18B852-BA TEMPLATE REAR SPEAKER OPENING
D8AF-18B852-AA TEMPLATE REAR SPEAKER OPENING

Stereo Installation Kit E4ZF-18814-BA lists (PARTIAL LISTING)
E2ZF-18971-AA SPEAKER 5.5X7.5 QTY. 2
E1EF-18978-AWA SPEAKER GRILL PLASTIC PAINT TO MATCH QTY. 2
E2DF-18978-AA SPEAKER GRILL METAL PAINT TO MATCH QTY. 2
E2AF-18B852-BA TEMPLATE REAR SPEAKER OPENING
D8OJ-18B852-AA TEMPLATE REAR SPEAKER OPENING

Premium Sound Conversion Kit E4ZZ-18B990-A lists (PARTIAL LISTING)
E4DF-18971-AA SPEAKER 5.5X7.5 QTY. 2
no grill
no template

Conclusion: It would seem there were rear interior panels without cut outs at least up to 84 (starting in 79). Possibly the same for 85. Also remember there were numerous major changes incorporated mid-year 85 on the Mustang and probably the Capri too. This is referred to as the 85.5 model. Any round speaker holes were probably not factory Ford.

Hope this helps.

I would be interested to know about any SVO radio delete cars (comp prep packages) and what they have in the back. For 84, 85 and 86.

I also wonder if Ford did it one way for some SVOs (no rear speaker cutouts) and another at mid-year 1985-86 (w/speaker cutouts).

If they changed their procedure for Speaker Delete cars in general, then I wonder if that would have reflected on the ascMcLaren build too....

The comp prep cars are so rare that the 84 version is often questioned if it existed (built). A few have some credibility with one being the Mac Tools Car. Here are the replies I got back on the other board. 85.5 had significant changes and 86 was little to no change. They are a few others who might have some more input on the subject.

Replies:
-My early 85, (3/85) does not have any speakers, speaker holes, or anything, just smooth rear quarter panel trim.
Johnny

-My 85 comp prep has speaker holes that have been cut, I didnt think it should have had them. Thanks for the calarification.

The 84 comp prep should have speakers in the rear because all of them came with radios.

As far as I have found out the 86 comp preps had speaker grills but no speakers.

Not much to go one with those replies.

One 85 had nothing back there while the 86 had fake grills.

That's nutty.

It sorta kinda follows what I was thinking is that maybe a change in how Ford worked with the radio delete option made a difference as to what asc put in the back of the coupes for speakers. :shrug

We will never know for sure what went in the back of the 85s unless a few 100% bone stock 85 asc coupes come out of the woodwork.

From 1979 through 1986, the rear speaker openings for 3 door model Mustangs and Capris were NOT molded into the panel. The holes were cut at the assembly plant with a template when a vehicle was ordered with a stereo radio. Dealer upgrades to stereo were cut with a template included in the Ford radio upgrade kits.

In 1987, the Mustang rear quarter trim panels were revised, and the speakers were moved up beside the rear seat. There are "delete" grilles for this location, as all trim panels had the holes, since stereo radio installation rates were nearly 100%. There are no factory "delete" grilles for the earlier models, where the location was a fairly flat surface.

Radio delete faceplates were available for Mustang/Capri, and were used with both the "Radio Delete" option and the "Radio Prep" option.

Mustang and Capri dropped the AM radio option in 1985 (the rates in 1984 were 2.6% for Mustang and 0.8% for Capri). Concurrent with this action, radio wiring for power, and the front and speakers was combined into main wiring looms (14401 in front, 14405 in rear).

In 1984, only 4.2% of Mustangs, and 0.5% of Capris came without a radio. In 1985, it was 4.7% of Mustangs, and 3.9% of Capris. For 1986, it was 3.4% for Mustangs, and 2.3% for Capris. These radio delete numbers would include the SVO Mustangs.

I was the Ford radio "kit engineer" in Ford's Electronics Division from 1982 until 1986, and WROTE the book that (Ford Sound System Catalog) that Kevin referred to.

Here is a guy with an almost IDENTICAL 5.0 automatic 85 GS (built by the book...auto, no sport seats, no air dam). And his is VERY VERY LATE!

His interior trim code is FYC which is sand beige low back seats...he also has that extra character in the code...this time a "C"....I hypothesized that maybe Ford used 3 codes for sand beige in 1985..."FYA" for the leftover 1984 material...."FYB" (or maybe just "FY"?) for the normal 85 material and "FYC" for late material?

svo413, or cobrajeff, can you tell me the power rating of the FRONT stock Ford speakers?

Were they the same from 79-93?

The Kenwood deck I am installing has 10w/channel (probably max power rating) output. I was told that the 3.5" speakers sold on the market (35w/channel max) will be too powerful for the deck to drive correctly.

I don't know the power rating on the speakers. I will take a look at the Sound System Catalog and see if there is anything in there. I am not an audio expert but an electronics engineer and this is the first time I have ever heard of using an over rated speaker would give bad results. I guess it's possible but the fronts don't produce much bass and that's what I would expect would be affected. If it were me, I would go with the premium sound or after market speakers.

Well, maybe I'm making something out of nothing. But somebody said that the deck should have enough "oomph" to move the speaker cones. At 10w/channel....thats not a whole heck of alot out of the Kenwood when the lowest power 6.5 speakers from Kenwood make like 150w. For the fronts I was thinking the stock ones may sound "ok" and be matched allright with the Kenwood. Not looking for perfection at all but I don't want them to sound like a bee buzzing in my ear because the radio is way underpowered.

I think I could snag a 35w/channel alpine amp from ebay that would fit up under the dash out of site and mind like the verts. But those small ones only drive 2 channels and I would send that signal back to the rears which will need more.

Worst case, I just get some cheapo speakers all the way around and not sweat it.

I checked the Ford catalog and found nothing on the power ratings. 10 watts does sound about right for the standard speakers. I believe the premium sound system on the SVO was rated at 25 watts per channel. That would put the premium sound speakers at 25 watts and it used a seperate 4 channel amp on the MTR. The ETR radios only had an amp on the front channels as the rear channels amp was built into the radio.

The manual lists the premium sound speakers as E45F-18808-AA 6 ohms. Yes that part number does look funny but it's in the book several places and a similar one in the OSI cat.

As for getting good sound by driving the speaker, look for the sensitivity rating. This is how loud a speaker will play. I would look for something in the 92-95 dB. Most of the speakers seem to be rated for 2-25 or 35 watts on the front sized ones.

For the best set up, I would ask around and see what others use or speak to a professional ( try several) to see what they suggest.
