Vert repair questions

Post by svo413 »

I've never had a convertible before so I have a couple of questions.

1. Can the rear windows be replaced without replacing the whole top? They seem to be sewn in and I don't think it's feasible.

2. There is a cable that runs down the seam above the side windows, mine seems to be broken off at the back. Can that be replaced easily and where does it attach at the rear? I know if I take it to a repair shop they will try to talk me into a new top. Mine is in good shape except the rear window is starting to yellow at the bottom. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Get some of that plastic window/headlight polish at autozone. Somebody tried it and claimed it made those windows new again.

It may have just removed the cloudiness but its worth a try.

On some convertibles (especially those from the 19sixties) the roof & rear window are seperate, and the rear window (plastic) can be replaced w/out doing an entire new top. This is NOT the case on our ascMcLarens. A new Rr. window mandates an entire new roof.

I tried the Meguires plastic polish and it works well. I have what looks like yellow moss growing at the bottom and seems to be spreading. Actually, I think the plastic is breaking down around the bottom edge. The rest is the window is clear and very stiff. I didn't think the plastic could be replaced.

How about that cable?

I might be wrong, but I would think any good convertible uphoustry shop could replace those plastic windows. Several convert. cars came with the plastic windows. I am sure they could un-stitch, then stitch some new plastic in there. One of my sides is actually broke, but is time for me to get a new top anyway. It is starting to dry rot.

vert top repair

The back windows can be replaced - my neighbor who sews boat canvas restitched my whole top and gave me 3 new plastic windows. I didn't have much choice, when I bought my '83 I was told the top was toast and had been left in the down position for years and when I put it up I realized that the cloth was almost perfect, but -- some type of ants were munching on the stitching :screwy: - walking away with every bit of it- just when you think you've seen it all... Anyway, the cables were fine and although I haven't reinstalled everything, it doesn't seem too difficult to do.

Vert top cable

Post by hanksgt »

Yes, there is a steel cable that runs above the side windows. I can pull the cover off the '87 tomorrow and get some details if you would like. I have a new top for it, just have not been brave enbough to try to install it myself.
