How should it be or how would you list it?

If you were entering a car show with an 1985 ascMcLaren 5.0 sc;

1 - What would be the proper way to list it?

2 - How would you list it?

Make: Mercury - Model: ascMcLaren
Make: Mercury - Model: sc 5.0
Make: Mercury - Model: Capri
Make: ascMcLaren - Model: 5.0 sc

Thoughts? Reasons?

This is how I thought it should be listed (with the exception of the year for
mine), but I still get weird looks and questions from many of the judges
let alone the passer by's.

Just curious as to how others might have listed. I am sure you are the
expert on this. It seemed like stating "Mercury - ascMcLaren with a body
style of 5.0 sc - convertible" might have killed some of the questions.
Funny how most people do not know what a Capri is let alone McLaren.

By the way Mike, I am in the same boat the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup. They had a specialty class till they decided to take it off and now they have a 79-93 Convertible class (I do believe that is what it was ) so if I entered my car in that class (When it is done) it would not be fair to the other people because their no competiton against a 87 ascMcLaren Mustang. But then again it is very fair. It is a judged show so they look for things like Exterior Apperance, Interior Appearence, Engine Bay is clean, I could go on and on but the whole point is that they only made 479, you would say they win because of the rareness but if my cars paint is faded or crack or may enigine bay looks like crap or my interior is messy with junk every where they well pick the runner up with the higher points.

While the 87 and up cars are easily classified as Mustangs, the 84-86 Mercurys don't really qualifly as Mustangs. Many clubs have a signature series class for Saleen, Roush etc. I would go with that class. Be carefull as MCA has special judging rules for the Saleen. I recently judged several at a recent show. If you want to show th 84-86s at a Mustang show, call and ask.

Most of the time, its listed as 1988 Ford Mustang ASC McLaren, and I'm placed in the '87-93' convertible (open) class.

I too have seen that they've started special classes for the Saleens, Roushes, & Steedas in larger shows. This won't happen with ASCs until more people that own them start showing them and increase the visibility of them.

I've shown my car probably 4-5 times (since June of '88 - how ironic #688) prior to August of this year and have been, lets just say "successful" and leave it at that.

My latest trial was in August, I entered a medium size all Ford show, in which again I was in the '87-'93 vert class, no problem - I thought. I was 1 of 7 cars entered in that class. The other 6 cars were GTs & LX 5.0s anywhere from stock to slightly modified, about 4 of them were very nice clean cars, 2 were - ehh. I thought I was pretty safe, as long as Sandy didn't show up with one of his '90s .

The verdict? I didn't place. Not even 3rd. HA. Evidently, GTs & LXs are better. After the show I tried to talk to a couple of the organizers of the show (the next day via phone) to get some info on why and what kind of weed they were smoking? Nothing. I couldn't get anyone to tell me anything. I would've just like to know what the issues were with the car so I could improve on them although I don't know what that would be. Being objective, the only thing that could have been better would be my engine bay, it could've been a little cleaner than it was, but it wasn't a show killer.

So, 87ASC, don't think that just because you have an ASC your going to win.

Peter, there is a big big problem being slapped into the Steeda, Saleen, Rousch and other similiar nameplates. That is, they are all about speed and go fast. A stock ascMcLaren cannot compete (performance-wise) with the aforementioned. Coupe-wise, we have a B303 Cam,a lowering kit and ascMcLaren designed springs. This is a nice start, or a nice canvas on which to begin. HOWEVER, as a car entered into "Stock" class we have nothing to even raise our hoods about. Any, off the delivery truck Saleen, Stedea Rousch (and others) can eat us alive.

Convertible-wise (Capri or Mustang) we are stock under the hood. We have a lowering kit (I think.......) ~ Those attracted to this type of car want death defying speed & performance. A stock McLarern is cold soup to this group.

I always go into "Special Interest" catagory, to avoid such. The age group is older and the need-for-speed is less, while the appreciation for rare and / or unique cars is very high.

You McLaren is nice, Pete, but next to a Saleen with $20,000 worth of upgrades & go-fast goodies, whose gonna look at yours?
Park it over in the Special Interest Corral and you'll go home hoarse from talking 'bout it !

try labeling a 1985 motorsport gp4. there is alot of stuff to say about these cars.

i have only had mine at a few show, & i wasnt expecting any awards. just wanted to show off.

but the thought of what to call it has driven me crazy for years.

according to the dealer lit, the car is called "Motorsport Capri".
but then everyone asks "what is it"

so i would put on my display board(when i make 1) the following:

1985 Mercury Motorsport Capri Detroit Grand Prix Pace Car by ASC Mclaren
alttile long winded, but it covers all the info.
but i still get snooty comments such as "its just another 5.0"
even 5.0 mustang owners dont give the car props.
i got into it at a show this summer with a 79 indy pace car owner.
me & my buddy were checking out his ride & i mentioned my pace car was in the other lot, & he got alittle cocky about the ride.
i got the "its only a regional special edition" response. so i responded with "yes, but there is only 30 & ASC converted them" followed by
"how many 79 indys were made? over 10 grand!"
then before he could respond, i asked "is a 70 twister mustang rare?"
he said yes, to which i replied "that too is a regional special edition".
he shut up at that point. but it wasnt over. my buddy asked if the 79 was faster than mine. i said mine was alot faster & the 79 pace car felt like you were driving with the emergency brake on

also got some flack from another indy owner at another show at ford motor hq earlier this summer. had to put him in his place at the telegraph cruise 2 months later .

personaly, i think the mustang owners just feel threatened because the capri looks better than there mustang counterpart & draw more attention.

but i digress, dahberg i would probably say your car would be called

or

I felt pretty bad at the same show as "Shelbyscarab" my GP Capri was but in the Mercury class from 19??-present. But my is no show car. I tried to get it in with the Mustangs and no way.

I do think that if you are parked next to a Grand Prix Capri. a car not seen much that the cars on either side lose some of there Eye appeal.
Sorry Shelbyscarab I did think you should have gotten something.

What was next to the Saleen Capri or the other GP car.

At least I know I am not alone! Thanks for the reply. I have attempted to fill out regisration forms stating "1985 Mercury Capri ascMcLaren" only to pick up my registration packet and find "Mercury" listed with everything else deleted. I have not been able to find out why the show sponsors remove my listed information? I fear they have no idea what a Capri is let alone an ASC McLaren SC. It has been frustrating to say the least. Unfortunately, I have not been able to enter the right shows. Missed an opportunity due to a conflict in schedules to participate in a class as a four eye. I think these people might have a better understanding of the different vehicles. As long as Mike has been preaching to the choir over on foureyedpride, one would think some of them could show some respect for the Capri!

I was beginning to think it might be better to just drop Mercury and Capri, list it as:

Make: 1985 ascMcLaren
Model: SC 5.0 Convertible

At least then they could not list it as merely a Mercury!

Read where it begins "It would not be fair." and you will see what I mean . But your right I should'nt go around thinking I will win at every show because it is a ascMcLaren and they only 479 . By the way I think you should have at least placed. Your car is beautiful (Especially in Blue ).
