1985 1MH not 1ME

Post by dahberg »

I've oft wondered IF there are any actual tangeable build differances between the two. Such as exhaust, muffler, chassis or additional welding in the cowl areas, between the two.
Sandy, perhaps this guy on Ebay would have some answers?

Looks to be extensively modified, but then again, perhaps some of this is due to direct order from factory? Sorry for the long link, I have not yet taken time to figure out how to shorten. Simple, I know, I am just lazy.

On this I can only rely upon info as told to me several (no, many!) years ago.

1ME were cars that were on the assembly line or about to be, that were "built not sold" for a dealer "bank'. 1MH cars were cars that were ordered by ascMcLaren, for a sales "bank" (unsold inventory) ~ the alterations on 1MH cars were the omission of parts that ascMcLaren would not use, need and want for the conversion, such as cargo area finishing trim. Personally, I think there is more "status" to a 1MH car, but that's just me.

Interesting! I should have paid closer attention to your original post. I can see your point on the thought of having more of a "status" rating.

It makes more sence to me, than perhaps others, as I know & understand automotive assembly line scheduling. In a nutshell, and not to be too repetitive, it all has to do with that D32 ascMcLaren code. When a company (final user {end user} is buying or I should day, ordering cars in bulk, there are several pages of codes open to them, that are NOT available to the public.)
Example:
In my years with Dodge, I worked 100s of Bids. For G.E. & Westinghouse, public utilties, Johnson & Johnson to name a thimble-full. One of them was the FBI. Now, the FBI bought 100s of base model Diplomats. However, they wanted the 50/50 split bench seat in the front. Well, that was standard equipment in th upline Diplomat SE ~ but they didn't want all the other premium items (nor the higher price) of the "SE". So, Chrysler created a CODE, just for the FBI, they put the 50/50 split bench FROM the SE into their base model Dips. In order for the FBI to pick & choose across model lines the ITEMS that they wanted, a special code was made that allowed the taboo, to be made.

Certain colors are actually OWNED, too. Westinghouse blue (a bluish-lilac); UPS Brown is an owned color, Mary Kay Pink is owned, Cutty Stark Liquer Yellow is owned, among many others.

Point here is, with ascMcLaren buying cars in bulk, a code was made FOR THEM, that being D32ascMcLaren. This permitted 100s of alterations, FACTORY made FOR ascMcLaren in the process of the build, which would be foreign to anyone except Ford internal and ascMcLaren.

I have listed some of these (I think  on the info page herein).
Example: All under the convertrible code recieved the doors from a convertible, even though they left the Ford plant as 2-Door sedans, this so there would be no framed door, when the roof was removed. Mustangs made with nothing in the rear seat area, Capri(s) too. This is why you'll see a door jamb sticker on many Capri 'Verts that says
INCOMPLETE VEHICLE. This is known as a "Z" car. A Z-car is one that is going to an aftermarket convertor, usually to become a limousine, flower car, stretch, or, in our case, a 2-seat 'Vert.

With a Z-car code, anything is permissable to satisfy the client.
It's complicated this here manufacturing process.
Ford is the most understanding to aftermarket & convertor's needs.

Kind of like the difference between a "spec" track home and custom built. The "spec" home has all the standard items of carpet, vinyl, low end faucets and light fixtures, base heating and air conditioning units and so on while the custom built could have all top of the line or at a minimum a vastly improved base foundation.

It would be neat to see some unmolested 1MH models and get an idea of more of the differences. Might not be much of a surface or visable nature to the differences though. So, back to the original post on Ebay - I might be extremely wrong assuming the car has been modified!?! Since it is a 1MH, it might be more correct than my '85 with the exceptions of stated mods. Oops! My bad.

I count 15 items on the car that would be incorrect for "stock" restoration, and that does not count anything underhood. It's certainly "eye-candy" ~ but then again, so would be a colorized Mona Lisa portrait in an Andy Warhole blinking laser-show frame !

FWIW, Dahberg, if you look in the Ford 1985 Specifications Manual on page 6, they list the manufacturer codes.

1ME = Ford Motor Comapny, Mercury Make, Passenger Car
1MH = Ford Motor Company, Mercury Make, Incomplete Vehicle

There are 13 codes total.
