What type valve covers should my 85 have?

Post by red390gt »

I have a 1985 Mclaren 5.0SC convertible. Should it have plain black stamped steel valve covers or the finned aluminum valve covers?

Automatic or manual car?

Not sure on the automatic/cfi cars...I thought those were stamped in 1985.

Carbed 1985 5.0 cars were definitely finned.

My car is a 1985 5.0 CFI & automatic. So that means it should have the stamped steel?

I am fairley certin that the cfi aod cars came with the finned valve covers from the factory on the 84-85's not the black. Here is a photo of my former 84 vert it was #26 and it was cfi see linky:

my 85 rs had the AOD EFI set up & had the black steel covers & was completly stock. that was the norm from the factory. i am positive on that.
i imagine the ASC's in 85 with that combo had the same but not positive.
i have not a clue as to what the 84 cars had though.

Nope. All 1986 5.0s got the stamped valve covers.

Here is a 575 mile 1986 example to prove it:

Yeah I'm certain all 86+'s had the aluminum ones like Mike said...except 93 Cobra's...they had black stamped "Cobra" versions...

I didn't realize 85 CFI cars got the stamped ones...all's I've ever seen were Carb'd cars with the finned aluminum ones...

86?

Post by svo413 »

Ok, I may be wrong on the 86 Capri. I assumed they would be the same as the 86 Mustang.

I bought a new 86 Mustang and had to wait 3-4 months for delivery because the v8s were not being produced. The 86 mustang came with finned valve covers.

86 again

Mike, look closely at the photo. It has the raised oil fill tube on the right and finned valve covers!

I enlarged that photo on my PC and it does have the raised oil fill but the valve covers do not appear to have any fins. The vavle cover almost looks like the flat top type aluminum valve cover that you see on the 87-93 5.0 HO Mustangs like the ones shown below:

On Sandy's car, there are no fins or "ribs" to those valve covers. The top appears smooth to my eye just like the ones red390GT posted.

Are we talking about the same thing?
