Air Horns
Air Horns
Ok I need some guidance.
Is there any way to fix the air horn compressor? The horn doesn't work on the capri I just picked up and I've found that it has the original air horns (85 mounted under front drivers side area under headlights) but they dont work. A voltmeter shows 12v on the wire when when I push down on the horn, but nothing happens. Is there a way to fix this compressor thing or do I need to find a replacement?

You can either get a replacement air horn compressor from Hank in Florida or take the compressor apart and see what is wrong.
They do come apart although you may need to coax the screws a bit.
It is a pretty simple setup inside and not much should go wrong. If the windings are burnt out, you may need to rewrap it with new wire.
The replacement Hank has is not the same, it is a newer version but it works exactly the same. I don't know if the bracket is the same size or not. Similar air horns can be purchased in department stores or even Autozone and the like.
Don't toss the original compressor, I would take it to rebuild if you can't get it to work. I could also sell/trade you one of the replacements Hank has as I bought one from him years ago and still have it knocking around.

My suggestion is that if you can get the top of the compressor apart, put in some graphite.
Earlier versions of these compressors had an oil inlet and took oil. Later ones did not have this inlet so I assume that they used graphite for lubrication.

As far as I know, they used the stock Ford Mustang Horn, allthough a few, very few 1987s have been found with the Air Horns.

One of few. My guess would be the same ones that they used on the 1986 Capri(s). Leftover inventory.
