E me, I have some saleen parts and would like to restore a saleen next.

They are nice cars also. If you love mclarens, you should love all tuner cars. Saleens, Kenny Brown Cars, BBK and others from the 80's I missed? DECH's

No, not really. Allow me to explain. The tuner cars have many many items added on to them. 99% for the purpose of going
faster but sometimes the added weight actually slowed them down, in the name of "different styling". 95% of these added on features, were made by a handfull of aftermarket products, that were hand picked by the names youi mentioned above, as a package off items that they would include on their product.

In contrast, the ascMcLarens were specially built to become what they are, by FoMoCo on the assembly line. Ford was in fact the grandfather while ascMcLaren was the father. Many special components went into our cars, from FORD, and in the case of the Mercury Capri Hatchbacks of 84 85 & 86 several items that were NOT available on regular Capri 5.0 RS hatchbacks.
Looking at a hatchback Capri, you'll note that the side-rear fender caps are part of the hatch. Now....you remove the hatch, to procede to make a convertible out of it....so...... how is it that the final product - from ascMcLaren - has proper rear fenders ? Remember, they went bye bye with the hatch.
Answer? Ford supplied the need parts. All asc McLarens have the code D32 on them. THAT's FoMoCos code that is made to become an asc McLaren. There was no in-house special code for the others that you mentioned. You could buy one off the lot and ship it to one of the others along with $$$$ and you'd get your Saleen, DECH, Kenny Brown, or what ever else one wanted.

The others you mention are aftermarket tuner cars. The McLarens are factory supported American SunRoof conversions. American Sun Roof is a Tier I Supplier to FoMoCo.

THAT is THE beauty of the McLarens, in that they were supported by FoMoCo in design, engineering and distrubution, and in the Capri Convertible case in special parts manufacturing FOR the end product, as a joint partner with ascMcLaren.

Well, technically, a Saleen is not a tuner car. Saleen is actually a small volume car manufacturer. Steve used to love pointing that out to anyone who'd listen, especially if you compared a Saleen to a Steeda.

Yes that is true about Saleen.

All of the above mentioned cars are more than likely faster in 0-60 and 1/4 mile times than an asc McLaren. But remember, that asc McLaren NEVER touted nor advertised this product as a high performace competitor. Actually ONLY the 1984-1986 Mercury Capri Hatchback ascMcLaren had ANY "tuning" under hood. The alterations to the 1984-1986 ascMcLaren Capri Hatchback were but 2.

1. The B-303 Hi Po Cam was installed
2. The 3.73:1 Rear end was a No Charge option in the 1986 model year, but only on the units ordered with the Automatic Tranny.

Other than those, there was no fiddling with any performance enhancing items.

It was more along the lines of owning something very unique in appearance, that stood out among the masses.

There was a couple hundred pounds of extra welding and anti body sag materials added, and that increased the weight, so I'd guess that box-stock, a 5-Speed McLaren would be slower than a Mustang LX V8 Coupe, the mule upon which the McLaren was made.

The most captivating sight I've ever seen, (car-wise) (in a photo) were about 200 1989 Mustang LX V8 2-Door Notchbacks parked in rows side-by-side like about 150 in Black and perhaps 50 in White, and all identcal exteriors.
ascMcLaren's inventory MULE yard. The white cars all had blue interior and the others had grey or red or tan interiors. I seem to recall an employee telling me that cars with their windshield wipers "up" denoted the manual tranny cars.

Where were they parked?

Sandy --
Where did ASC parked the cars. The Livonia shop didn't have an open parking lot around it. Some around the building but not enough to park 150 cars.

'Ya, about fifty at the Livonia shop and someplace else (not too far away) were the rest, but I never thought to ask WHERE....?

To aid finding a "proper" unit, Sticks did have their wipers in the "up" posistion. All Oxford White units had Regatta Blue (1987-1989) interiors and all 1990 Oxford Whites had Crystal Blue Interior. The remainder of the inventory were all Raven Black, with Scarlet, Sand Beige, Titanium Gray (1987-1989) or Ebony (1990 only) or Opal Gray (1990 Only) interiors.
