How stupid do they think people are?

This is a place where we discuss anything BUT ascMcLaren cars. TV, movies, vacations, family, pets, girlfriends, college, school, OTHER cars, whatever....that kinda thing. Taboo is Religion, Ethnic Background, Politics.

How stupid do they think people are?

Post by bryan »

Anyone who has posted cars to Craigslist, etc. is probably all too familiar with these types of emails. This scammer exchanged several messages with me asking what seemed to be legitimate questions about the car.

But who in their right mind would be dumb enough to fall for this one? It must work sometimes, or they wouldn't keep trying.

"Hello ,

Thanks for the message ,i'm ok with the price and I want you to consider that it is sold to me for now .Concerning the shipping, i have made arrangement with the shipping agent that will be coming for the pickup at your location as soon as we seal these transaction .

I will send you a companies check of $17,500 in your name and you will deduct the cost of the car when it clears and the remaining balance will be send to the Shipper via money gram money transfer for immediate collection/shipping arrangment of the CAR.

If this is okay with you do get back to me immediately with your details....so that the check can be sent ASAP

Regards,
MARY"

Don't even bother getting worked up over it. Its just standard operating procedure nowadays. Apparently people still fall for it enough to make things worth their effort.

I had the same thing happen to me. I have a fake money order sitting here for $3300.00. The person wanted to buy a set of truck rims from me for $800.00 and for me too give the rest to the shipping company.

No, I didn't send the rims or cash the check.

What normally happens is that people will take the checks and deposit them in there bank. A couple of weeks will go buy and the bank comes back after the person who cashed the check because it was fake. Then, they have to come back up with the money to pay the bank back. They can also get in a lot of trouble.

So in the end they are out money and items.

I just tell them that I need a non-refundable cash deposit up front and that the item will be held until the check clears the bank. Or, my credit union will take a direct wire transfer of cash if they truely need it done quick. Funny, but nobody follows up with me after that.

How fake looking is the money order?

It actually look genuine.
I new about the scam before hand. I just wanted to see if the person would really follow through.
