Starter

Post by Havoc »

Sigh now that I have had her back for two weeks now the starter went out on me. I'm having a heck of a time trying to get to that top bolt.

I have plenty of extenders but I cant seem to get to the bolt and if I do I dont see how I'm going to have the movement to remove the top bolt.

Remove the header on the passenger side if you can. Took me 10 minutes to remove it then I had no problems getting to the starter.

BTW, why do you think it's the starter? Did you take the starter to relay cable and touch it directly to the pos side of the battery to see if it goes? MAKE SURE THE CAR IS IN NUETRAL WITH THE EBRAKE ON AND THE WHEELS BLOCKED!

If the starter is hung up on the engine's ring gear, that is more of a ring gear issue.

I use a wobble extension from the front of the motor mount. theres a small opening and you may not get square on the bolt head but it Works.

Good luck. And then consider using the Newer smaller starter used on newer Ford cars. I will look for the the link.

Ok what I did was I took the tire off. (I'm a big guy just made it easier for me to move). I used a wobble extension and was able to get the top bolt out. It was a pain in the butt at first but you have a few small openings around the bolt. I moved the extension in put the the wobble about in the middle of my extensions and it came out. I Taped the bolt to the socket to put it back in and that worked well to thread it through the openings.

Negusm I checked my cables and replaced the celenoid just to be safe. I thought it was the starter bacause the last time I started before It died I heard some grinding.

The wobble Socket was a life saver!!

If you hear grinding, its probably going to come back. Your ring gear probably has some bad teeth to it where the starter can't always grab easily and you get a nasty grinding sound.

What will happen is that the starter will bump the motor a little bit forward each time it grinds and eventually it will catch and start the car. Then the car will star fine for several days (maybe 2 weeks) and then it'll hit the same spot and the grinding will start all over. It'll start getting worse too.

Whats the atl upgrade? we are doing a 5.0L conversion on my sons 85 Turbo Coupe Bird using 91 mustang 5.0L Ho driveline. I think we will up-grade the starter for sure on the swap.
