Prpossed Engine Changes that wern't done ... OR were they?

Post by Sandy »

I have a very rare paper, with BOTH Ford AND asc/McLaren copywrited logos on it, setting forth alterations that appear to be agreed upon, by both parties.
I'd love to know which actually made it onto which cars. I think some of them made it on to the Capris and others made it onto Mustangs, but not all to any.

* 3.23:1 Axle Ratio upgraded to 3.7:1 (This made it onto '86 Coupes w/Automatic)
* Revised Exhaust Valves & Revised Valve Heads
* B-303 Camshaft (This made it onto some)
* New Forged Pistons with Integral Skirts
* Oil Groove Drain-Back holes engineered to withstand the internal forces
* Wide Open Throttle Cut-Out of accesories
* Modified Caster & Camber (This made it onto all Coupes)
* Increased Suspension Bushing with Shorter Springs & Damper units
* Revised Braking with Heavy Duty Linings & Brake Portioning Valve.
* Revised Power Steering for more feedback
* Replace Rocker Arms to incrase Rev Limit to 7,000 R.P.M.
* Lowered Ride Height (This made it onto all)
* Carerra 50/50 Shocks ( This made it onto All)

That's it! A couple my car has ~ others I do not know where to look for, or what to look for.... Mike or mike :) do either of you know?
Also I think that there are differences between 84 85 & 86 Coupes

There is also a listing of exterior design elements that never made it! Some we should be thankful for not making it!! 1 or 2 others would have been okay.....maybe!!
One was the seldom seen IMSA-TYPE recessed scoops in the hood and another was a roof spoiler just forward of the top of the bubble-back window, where the top of the window meets the roof.
Another "idea" (BAD) was to use the Mustang hatch and do away with the bubble back window, but that was the very 1st "idea" that was dropped.
Adding Ford Applied exterior paint colors each year was agreed upon, this was done in 1986 on both models. Smoke Grey, Raven Black and Silver Metallic appeared on the '86 Coupes, joining the Dark Blue and White from 1985, while the 'Vert for '86 added Paris Blue & Atlantic Blue & Silver.
THIS LAST paragraph applied ONLY to the Coupes !!

Can anyone shed more light on these?

I will be off site for several hours...back to hospital for review of yesterday's Cat Scan. Yup, I am terrified. It's like "Do or Die day" today, so I may not return until late afternoon EST. :cry:

Sandy, much of that list sounds like things Ford was already going to do on the Stock Mustangs/Capris.

-----------------------------

* 3.23:1 Axle Ratio upgraded to 3.7:1

Sandy don't you have this on your car? My coupe only has the 2.73:1.

* Revised Exhaust Valves & Revised Valve Heads

Haven't gotten any info on this. Ford did use a new E5 head for 1985. Maybe this change was incorporated in it for that part?

* B-303 Camshaft

Seems like only some of the Capri coupes got this.

* New Forged Pistons with Integral Skirts

85 4v 5.0 cars got forged pistons. CFI cars did not. This was for both Mustangs and Capris...all of them.

* Oil Groove Drain-Back holes engineered to withstand the internal forces

Heads or Block? Again, Ford did use a new E5 head for 1985. Maybe this change was incorporated in it for that part?

* Wide Open Throttle Cut-Out of accesories

The AC has a kicker to turn it off at WOT. There was supposed to be a 2 speed accessory drive setup for ALL 1985 5.0 cars but it NEVER got into production. It was supposed to separately control the accessories independantly from the engine RPM. Again this would not have been for asc per se.

* Modified Caster & Camber

This is true of the Coupes and probably the 85 verts since I think a good number of 85 verts have come accross as lowered.

* Increased Suspension Bushing with Shorter Springs & Damper units
* Revised Braking with Heavy Duty Linings & Brake Portioning Valve.
* Revised Power Steering for more feedback
* Replace Rocker Arms to incrase Rev Limit to 7,000 R.P.M.

I'm betting the above 4 got nixed at some point.

* Lowered Ride Height
* Carerra 50/50 Shocks

The coupes got the shocks and lowered height. Seems like the 85 verts got lowered, no idea on the shocks? Anyone?

I had 308 gears and I also have the Brake Portioning Valve. Also, I believe all Capri's and Mustangs cut off accessories at WOT...

All cars get a Brake Proportioning valve. Did you get a different one than stock cars? An additional valve? My 85 has the stock E1 valve that all Mustangs/Capris in 85 got.

Mustangs/Capris can't cut off accessories except for the AC pump.

The power steering, smog pump, alternator all run at the same RPMs that the engine does (in proportion to their pulley's, etc). There is nothing to change that when idiling or at WOT.

Some emission valves may open up or whatever but those are another issue.

Back from hospital, will address THAT later...

My coupe has:-
3.73:1 Axle Ratio
B-303 Cam
Modified Caster & Camber (Notice in Glove Box printed on ascMcLaren Revised Braking with Heavy Duty Linings & Brake Portioning Valve.
Lowered Ride Height
Carerra 50/50 Shocks
Lowered Ride Height
Carerra 50/50 Shocks
But, I have no clue about internals.

Regarding the steering, she has the tightest and quick steering I have ever experienced, but I have never driven another 5.0 Capri of 1986 to compare.
It is a bit tighter than the ascMcLaren Mustang Vert.
It may have the quick ratio steering, but I cannot say for sure!

The rest ?????????

Sandy, there were two ratio steering racks in 86. The quick ratio (2.5 turns of the steering wheel lock to lock) was on ALL 5.0 Mustangs and Capris and SVO. The normal steering which was 3 turns lock to lock came on all other cars.

Next time you have your coupe out, turn the wheel all one way and then all the other way and count the revolutions of the wheel. It will be 2.5.

The ratio is determined by the steering rack. I highly doubt Ford would have used a special rack for asc or we would have heard of it from someone. If you are going by the "feel" of things when driving, it is probably because the Mustang vert is heavier, doesn't have the tie rod tips, and doesn't have the really low profile tires or modified alignment that your coupe does.

You might be a grandfather !!

When I have a moment or 2 or 3 I will go over to her and uncover her, connect the battery, and get in and start her and let her run 20 minutes and try the steering and count. I'd bet $$$$ it's 2.5 also. On the road, however, she can flip like a fish's tail, and drive circles around the 'Vert brothers.
