i found a place that makes convertible tops for the asc mclaren the email address is support@mtmfg.com i found it by typing in asc mclaren convertible top replacement. the top cost $421.00 w/shipping included. i hope this helps some of you out.

For $399 its not bad for an entire top w/windows new production. Anyone tried them or seen one, are they any good?

many many companies on line, whose ads I have read, as I did this one, all look good. All have cheap prices. Yet, to date, I have never seen an example that I could not tell and point out as an afterrmarket top, and not the original manufacturer. Every single one has incorrect pattern of stitching, and/or the two small wrap-arond plastic windows are TOO BIG, and TOO TALL and totally in error. The colors: They get black correct. All of the other colors are also "off". The blue is usally too bright, the Claret-Wine is too light in color, and the 9FOR REASONS UNKNOWN) OF DARK BROWN IS NEVER OFFERED!
Likewise the white vinyl selection is always not listed.

These tops are probably made to a price-point, therefore you will not be able to see the underside and/or the inner lining that is used.

This is not a $20.00 part, that you can toss away and recover from, being fooled.

You will have to pay installation costs, and then if does not fit, YOU and e'very one will blame the installer! WRONG !

Ask the seller if you buy it and have it installed by a reputable company & the top does not fit correctly, will they refund your $$$$ ??

HINT:

Buy an OEM from Hank. There is only one original, all the rest are copies. Ye Gits what ye pay for.

It's interesting how they break the ASC offerings into 3 year groupings: 89-90, 87-88, and 84-86. And how each has a different price. I always thought the same top design was used across all years regardless of Capri or Mustang.

And why in the world is the 84-86 Capri listed as a Mustang and not to be found as a Capri??

The 1984,85 & 86 are the same, but they are different than the 1987 & 1988 !! The 1989 & 1990 are different from the 1987 & 1988 ! Different stitching and different cut. The rear windows (all 3) are all the same, 1984-1990. The sun visors, by the way, are different EVERY single year! Show me a sun visor & I'll tell you the year of the McLaren.

Thanks for the info Sandy, I am a bit new to the ASC game, so trying to judge whats out there. Are there any problems with the NOS from Hank? They have been sitting in a box for 20 something years, do they lose pliability or not as stretchy?

When I needed a top, I went with NOS from Hank. The top is fine, but in retrospect, I should have bought one of the others that is available and saved a few hundred bucks.

Let's face it, there is only a tiny number of people who can tell the difference, and none of them is ever going to see your car in person. In addition, unless you envision performing a concours restoration on your car, it isn't going to make a lick of difference whether your replacement top is NOS.

What Robert says is true. But you will know it's not correct. If that does not bother you, then go for the price leader.

Mine came from Hank and is not exact for my 86 Capri. Probably a later version.
