Mclaren display

Post by dndzol »

I have been told my convert was displayed in the 1985 Detroit Auto Show. I have not been able to document it. Where can I go for information?

The only thing I can think of is to contact the Detroit Auto Show organizers and hope they have some kind of archive you might be able to rifle through and come up with a picture.

Beyond that....asc is dead and they destroyed all documentation regarding the 1985 cars.

I saw that and the '86 display. Hopefully, I have a photo deep in my collection.

Maybe the Detroit Free Press or Detroit News have something in their files? Both have online searches that go back many years.

I had a photo of what i though was a late 80's ASC Coupe prototype (coupe as in notchback) from the detroit autoshow or autorama in the late 80's. it was Jan/feb. 87 or 88.
think i sent it to sandy at one point & he dismissed it as an asc back in the early 90's.
it was a black coupe/notchback with the asc taillights and ASC silver mesh rims.
might be worth another look.
I will have to dig out the photo when i head back to detroit this spring.
may have been converted to look like an asc, but i remember it being a display car or something.
it was before i got into asc's.

Norfolk, eh? My people are from nearby Humphrey and Columbus. I would have never guessed that there was a McLaren in that neck of the woods.

I have two pictures from the Detroit Auto show. It looks like a 1985 or 86 Coupe and a vert. Guys I.m not sure if they are 85's or 86's. The sign behind the coupe says " 25 years ASC" The cars look dark in color and the Coupe has the ASC McLaren silver decal on the hood. The 'vert has a tan interior Both cars had been park next to each other with a rope around them. I took these picture myself at the Detroit Auto and told my wife (then girl friend) I would like to get one of these some day! Sandy can you help with more information? I will try and scan these on Sunday.

That being said, my money says it's the '86 display in January, 1986.

All the '85s had orange stripes/hood stickers

Jason, you're right. I have a pic of that same car. It was at Autorama in '88. I'll have to dig thru my picture stash and find it.

Were they showing the Coupe in '88? I seem to recall after production stopped, most of the displays were focused on the F-Body convertibles and the 'Verts.

I found my '89 Auto Show picks and no ASCs in there, which tells me there wasn't a Coupe that year because I take a photo of any one I see if I have a camera handy.

There is a pic of the Shelby Daytona display with the creepy Carroll Shelby automatronic at the wheel and the '89 Turbo TA display.

Hi Guys, Ya got me lookin' at some of old stuff. I've got a book called " 55 YEARS OF MERCURY " the complete history of the big "M" . It makes no mention of our cars in the index . But on page 212 , is a picture of a 'vert. And the caption reads ," This 1985 Mercury Capri convertable is a limited-edition model made by ASC/McLAREN. It is number 241 of 350 such cars built ". The car is not fully dressed, but looks to have a light colored interior. Problem being the shot is in black and white, but was taken at an indoor auto show.Hope this may be of some help to ya.
