ascMcLaren in a parts yard
ascMcLaren in a parts yard
Thanks to facebook, a friend from high school saw a photo of my '86 ascMcLaren. He is a car guy who still lives in our very small hometown.
He said that the owner of a local parts yard has an ascMcLaren. It is thought to be in rough shape, but is not being parted. I am dying to know how it ended up there, of all places. I am asking him to get some photos of it for me.

From my contact:
Dean says it's for sale. $2500 with a clean Kentucky(?) title. Dash plaque says it's #269. VIN-IFABP40E5HF211135. It was hard to read, dirty car, sun in a bad place etc. but I think thats right..Dean Hill, Tricity autoparts, 308-995-6153

The problem here, as I see it, it that if the current owner gave it to you absolutely free of charge, to take it from the pictures to a very respectable condition in appearance as well as driveability, safety, and a car to be greatly admired by others, the new owner is going to have way more money invested than the car will ever be worth.
My question is this. Why do persons who buy special cars, and I assume pay good money from them - - do this TO them? Buy a convertible of which 100,000 were made, not one that 1,015 were made.

On the topic of parts cars - does anyone know of a decent top frame available for parts? 86-0001 could use some donor parts. The latch assemblies are both frozen, and not likely to come out of the #1 top bow without damage.

I think many people out there simply did not consider ASCs to be a collector car and didn't treat them as such, instead treated them like a plain jane sebring vert.......lightning95sc wrote:Its amazing to me how cars meet such fates, sometimes. And I'm seeing more and more of it, lately.
Between useless neglect and abuse and solid gold pricing, its a wonder "REAL" car guys can still get a car.
Chuck
And the other problem has been the pricing..... the cars unfortunately have been underpriced/undervalued. While thats great for the typical "car" guy to pick one up and take care of it, many fall prey to unscrupeless (sp?) types that can unfortunately scrap together the money to buy one because they are so cheap and then "JCWhitneyize" it.......

It wasn't really until after I got what I got that I actually found out what I got. I found out fast that I am priveleged (and more lucky than anything else) to have this find even if I have to work to make it what it was.

Viewing the photos of that poor '87 made me drool for the parts goldmine it represents... and gave me sharp chest pains for the incredible waste of a fine automobile. Regardless of rarity or value, NO vehicle (other than maybe an '86 Yugo
) deserves this kind of treatment. If nothing else, throw a $20 tarp over the roof for heavens sake! A few more years out in the field and there won't be anything left to salvage from this one... and the astronomical asking price virtually seals its unfortunate fate.
