I noticed something interesting this evening and wish to have some info 'dug' up.
2 1986 mclarens need to be looked at here:
#1 is 1986 CUN : 612999 : Sequence # : 148 (A convertable)
#2 is 1986 CUN : 613000 : Sequence # : 089 (A coupe)
One number off.
If this is correct, then they had to arrive at ASC about the same time ?
If so - we need the dates they arrived at ASC and when they left ASC and were sent out to the dealership(s).
If they arrived at the same time (or close to it) - we could get a time frame on how much longer a vert stayed in the shop versus the coupe (since these two cars were made right behind each other at the assemble line and if they arrived at ASC at roughtly the same time)....
I have a feeling that Sandy and or Mike (Negusm) might be able to shed some dates or some light..... Or maybe they can tell me if I am wrong about my fact-finding question.

What I am about to type. is (at least) the 10th time I have done thi
FoMoCo built the Capris & Mustangs in blocks of 80; 100 0r 125 at a clip.
The cars were then sent by rail to ascMclaren. They were then unloaded to ascMcLaren storage yard. As a car (or cars) were needed. a porter would go outside and find a car. He is NOT about to look at every single car, and bring in the lowest VIN !!! They may have built 40 cars at ascMcLaren in between the 2 numbers you posted. Maybe more than 40! Their rail yard could hold over 100 cars. The dah plaques and the VINs are totally in no way represenative of one & OTHER !!!

Also, on ford assembly line the VIN do not follow in sequence. The VIN are assigned to a car when shceduled not when built.

There are two different issues here that I see....
- Cars that were produced before they were ordered and already at a dealership AND
- Cars that were produced BECAUSE of being ordered
If two people ordered a mclaren (to their specification in 86), it seems like the cars would be shipped during assembly line build in somewhat of a close order....
If a car that was to be built at ASC that was not ordered, then I see where the above comment would hold water more than a car that was ordered to be built. It wouldn't matter what car(s) were sent and when as much because it really wasn't on a tremendous time line as someone who actually ordered a car
Either way - I think there would be a difference.
Kinda like a drive through line gets catered more quickly to more than people inside (in theory).
I think it would be interested to know what cars were ordered vs what cars were already made.... I know - I know - I am probably digging too deep.....
(And yes - Sandy - you are correct - you probably have posted this info a dozen times and I am not trying to 'tick' you off, but there are too many posts with different info on them).... Got tired of looking.
Many years have gone by since some of the early posts and possibly you or someone has gained better knowledge than everyone knew or thought 5 and 6 years ago.

Very very few (I would guess, under 5%) of all ascMcLarens were retail consumer ordered. Reason being there was no retail advertising nationwide advertising. It was a "I walked in and saw it & I fell in love" kinda sale. So, they mostly all built UNsold, with no waiting retail buyer waiting.
95% were dealer ordered. Furthermore, there is very very little comparasion between a certain car's VIN and that car's Dash plaque.
As you know the dash plaques did not revert to #OO1 in 1988 & 1990 because 1987 & 1988 were viewed by ASC/McLaren as Series I while 1989 & 1990 were viewed as Series !!.
As I reported prior, in case you missed it, the cars arriving at ascMcLacen were unloaded at asc. They were ALL black cars, X-cept cars with BLUE interior, that were White exterior.
In 1988, because there were so many (1,015) they asked that cars with 5-Speed manual tranny be parked withtheir windshield wipers in the UP posistion. Automatics with wipers in the down (or OFF) position, so that porters could find a car that was needed, a little bit quicker.
He only had to look for the interior color & rthe Tranny.
There were also Non-ship to McLaren interrmittently on the FoMoCo assembly line, when there were shortages on McLaren builds.
Again, the VINs & Dash plaques are very different in order.
They are both correct, but have no relation to 1 & other.
