This is 1 of about 12 retractable Mustangs built, with only 5 known to exist. A true GT, this car was designed and engineered by Ben Smith, longtime Ford engineer responsible for the original 1957-1959 Skyliner Retractable. A true piece of Mustang history that is now for sale.

Wish I still had my 1959 Retractible. Bought it, at auction, after I repossesed it for $400.00. It ran, and I drove it for several years. 352 V-8 with AFB 4V carb. Fuel mileage sucked but gas was cheap. My ex-wife sold it one day while I was at work. It had sat in the driveway for a year awaiting new brakes, engine overhaul and the kids had played gas station with it. Sand in the gas tank. Some guy came by and offered her $150.00 for the 'scrap car.' She took it and was proud as punch. That's just one of many reasons why she is my ex. It was black and chrome. No rust.

A couple of weeks ago I stopped by a storage lot in Westland Michigan. Its just 3 miles from my house. There is a '57 Ford Skyliner retractable sitting the back of the lot. I took a couple pictures of it for the web site CARSINBARNS. It should be posted in the next couple of months. The front fenders are missing, Rusted out and its sinking into the ground.

bet your dad was serving in the miltary back then.
in those days it was for military families.
now, well, now its serves a different purpose.

Actually it was originally built to house the workers at the Willow Run bomber plant. He was a supervisor there until my younger sister died. Then he got drafted and off to Europe he went. All expenses paid courtesy of the U.S. Army.

And you're right. The last time I drove thru Norwayne it was a slum/dump, whatever you want to call it. A lot of good people came out of Norwayne back in the 40's/50's. I wouldn't let my dog live there now.

We haven't been in the area since 2006, and we didn't drive thru Norwayne then at all. Went there for our 50 year class reunion.

There's a homemade one-off at Classic Auto Showplace in Madison Heights. Looks nice enough.

It's the old Circuit City location behind Oakland Mall. It's where cars go to have their price stickers laughed at.
