Transmission Leak

Post by Kentennis »

A couple weeks ago I noticed an oil leak. Not from the center of the car but from the passnger side. A very small one. Took the car out the other day (Now up to 23,000 miles), and there was a large spot. Today I checked the fluid level cold. Someone overfilled it by quite a lot. It was fully serviced at 18,236 miles, just before I bought it. Some mechanic had his cranium and rectum switched. I'll have it drained tomorrow and refilled with the proper amount.

I fail to see how it could have happened, unless the mech lost count. The AOD takes the most oil of all the tranny's.

OIL? Only older manual transmissions took crank case oil.

I'm sure you must mean ATF.

Yes Mike, it is ATF. But that is a lubricant - hence - the word oil.

By 'the most of all the tranny's,' I meant the ones available in 1986. It holds/takes/uses the most ATF out of the 4 available.

There is some misinformation about using oil in the early T5 transmissions instead of ATF.

So the distinction is important.

Actually ATF is more of a hydraulic fluid rather than just a lubricant.

I need to get the tranny fluid changed in the daily drivers. I think I'll take them to the dealers as I really don't want to deal with trying to drain 17 quarts out of them each.

Problem is, I see many of the Jiffy Lube places take your money and never do the job.

I hope the dealer is more honest.

Mike the best thing to do is go to the dealer or a local shop that uses BG products. You can take a small sample of the fluid off the dip stick (if your car still has one) before and after the transmission flush. Then compare the color should be dirty before and nice and clean after.

2 additional cents worth...

Just remember, unlike engine oil, an automatic trans must have the fluid level checked with the engine RUNNING! Preferably with the vehicle sitting on a completely level surface, warmed to normal operating temp, with gear selector in 'Park'. Failure to do so will give erroneous readings. Check and wipe the dipstick at least twice. Color with most fluids should be a nice, deep cherry red and should never have a burned odor.

For those here with a manual transmission, personally I run Redline MTL in the T-5 but may try also give Mobil-1 synthetic ATF a try in the spring.

You can also check/double check the level when cold and not running.

Check your owner's manual for exact info.
