Due to some recent events, I removed the hood pad on my 89 LX vert. It seemed to be the typlical factory type which has layers of fiberglas that like to seperate. I bought the car from the original owner and its condition seems to match its age. It was attached with the typical reverse split pin hood pad retainers sold everywhere as a Ford part.
This weekend I removed the hood pad from the 88 ASC. While it looked to be the same, on closer inspection, it seemed to be more a compacted material. This hood pad was attached with similar hood pad retainers but these were christmas tree type push pins. Ford?
I was also shopping around for the NOS hood pad to replace the one on the 89 LX. The NOS ones seem to be harder to find and more expensive recently. I'm pretty sure there may be a repro one now as well. I did find may sites selling a Ford Racing hood pad now. I almost fell for it being NOS Ford but it does not seem to be an actual Ford Service Part. All of these including the NOS Ford ones seemed to be the more compacted design and not what came on the car from the Ford factory.
After giving it some thought, this is what I have concluded. The ASC Mustangs sent for conversion may or may not have included a hood pad. Either way it had to be removed to paint the underside of the hood. Odds are it would get messed up on removal. ASC probably ordered a stack of Service Repacement Parts hood pads from Ford to reinstall after the repaint. The retainers were likely not Ford but are close enough you really can't tell until you remove them.
The good news is the NOS part you buy today is probably the same part which came on the car new from ASC. I have one coming any day and will compare it.

Probably a correct analysis.
edit: Also remember, that cars get damaged during shipment all the time....and they get damaged while the dealer preps a car or even while moving it around on the lot.
I would imagine there are a few asc cars out there with a few repairs that original owners knew nothing about.
