decal or pinstripe - the stupid question of the day

Post by 75coug »

As I move toward getting my car painted, I have become concerned with ensuring that the gold stripe on my red 1986 convertible is done correctly. In looking at it, I cannot tell for certain whether it was painted on the car or is some kind of decal. My guess is the former, but I am not sure.

I suspect that many of you know the answer to this question. Whoever answers it first will be awarded a prize in the form of my undying respect and admiration.

I "doubt" the original was painted on....but anything is possible I guess.

There are bunches of pinstripe tape out there. Go to a body shop and ask about who does the pinstriping. They should be able to get the right width tape and have somebody apply it.

I for one can't stand the gold pinstripes on the red asc verts. It makes the car look exactly like a Jeep Cherokee Limited.

Now now, it isn't that bad. It is barely visible.

Huh, which came first? The chicken or the egg??? :argue:

While I appreciate Mike's opinion and could easily agree; did not the Cherokee copy from the McLaren? With this thought, IMOHO, I love the stripes on the red capri!!! I have owned a couple different Grand Cherokee Limited's, but none with the stripes as I thought they were hokey and not original. I wonder... :?:

Technically yes, but it just sticks in my mind that I saw the Cherokee first before I saw any asc with the gold pinstripes.

Thinking of the gold pinstripes prompted me to wonder how the McLaren would have looked if they had been built 5-10 years earlier. Instead of a little stripe, they might have had a Mercury/ascMcLaren version of the Screaming Chicken on the hood of the Trans Am. Kind of humorous, if you think about it.

[To all Pontiac fans: Please note that I love the 1970s Trans Ams as well as the chickens that adorned their hoods. No disrespect is intended.]

The difference is, it is unique to the ascMcLaren Coupes and I have never seen it anywhere else on any other car.

The only slight exception to that may be some Cavalier Z24s with a red/orange stripe in them. But those came after I already had my car...so its kind of reversed...as I think all those Z24s look like ascMcLaren Coupes.
