got the '86 SC home...
last night. Its rough, a bit more than it looked in the pics. But it is solid and has a couple interesting things about it. It was never titled and it was a dealership car its entire life. However, once it lost favor...it sat outside with no concern to it at all; sad. Question....what is the dash wood and what finish did it come with; oil? After sitting at least 5 years, it drove 215 miles home wonderfully...got 33 mpgs at 55mph ( I didn't want to go any faster, brakes were weak and tires cracked). I had them change the oil and coolant before I got there to pick it up. It had a slight lifter tick which went away once I stopped to get gas. It appears all original as far as mechanicals go..only new mufflers that I can see. Recaro seats felt wonderful, although I expected that ( have them in my 82). It smells like cat pee inside if you have even experienced that
I'll know more in the next couple weeks and will have more questions now that it is here. The resto will be slow, too many other projects going on..mine and customers.

sounds cool, post some pics when you get a chance? When I got mine it had been sitting for 10 years and the tires where cracked really bad, I don't think I would have driven it 200+ miles
. Good luck with the car!

OK..so I told myself if it had 3.08 gears I could live with that because this car isn't for trying to make it the fastest ( I am a speed freak at heart and have trouble controlling myself; see list of hot cars I own ). However, this little 86 has 2.73s Boooooo..I can't live with that. I have a set of 3.27s that will work nicely in there. So the question is...do most of these SCs come with 2.73s behind a 5 speed?

pre 1986 5-speeds came with 2.73:1
1986s came with 3.08:1
and after 1986 they (Mustangs) came with 3.08:1
Automatics came with 3:27:1
Some late late 1989s & some, but not all 1990 automatics
came with 3.73:1. 5-Speeds (Mustang) kept 3.08:1
I have seen with my own eyes a 1989 automatic 3.73:1 take
a 1985 Coupe with the 2.73:1 in the 1/4 mile. Both
were bone stock.
All 1984-1985 Coupes were 5-Speeds. Automatic was introduced on the 1986 Coupe. 9 were built. Mine is 1 of the 9. She's a 3.08 car.
Capri 'Verts could have been either Auto or Stick...Ditto Mustangs.
My '90 Mustang is a 3.73:1 car. Factory (the blue one) ~ ~ The Silver one ('90) is a 3.08:1 car.

It is the first 2.73 1986 5-speed that I am aware of.
Is it a very early car ? Built July, August, September of 1985 ??
Could it have been a Calif. Emissions car ? I'd love to know the reason.

Sandy, the 86 fact book (revised feb 1986) lists the 2.73 standard (my 85 is that way) but notes that the 3.08 is optional.

That is correct. I did some digging late late last night (early AM) and found the answer hidden in the D32 code. For '85 & 86 the 3.08 CODE (OPTION CODE) was INCLUDED in the 1986 COUPE build. Cars ordered with D32 and the convertible code did not include 3.08:1. Pete's is a 'Vert, right ? Thusly 2.73:1 was used. 2.73"1 was also in the '85 coupes I came to see after checking. So....the ONLY ones to get the 3.08:1 at the factory were the '86 Coupes, No....Not the EuroCoupes, as trhey were not built uinder D32 ascMcLaren coding.

I think a fair many 85 Coupes did get the 3.08 though from what owner's have said. I have always felt that my car was kind of "left out" in that regard.Sandy wrote:That is correct.
