How are the fog lights turned on and off in an 86 vert?

If there is a separate switch........where is it suppose to be and what does it look like?

Did the car have the ground effects/foglights put on by the dealer or were they ordered from the factory?

Normally the verts weren't going to get the asc air dam...and therefore no foglights...so therefore Ford probably wouldn't install any switch for it.

Now if the dealer installed the air dam, I would think that he would install a stock switch too under the left hand dash...along with wiring to the front to power the fog lights.

But if a previous owner installed the air dam/foglights, there may be nothing hooked up at all. Do you have the foglight wiring harmess installed up front?

I have no ideal how the car was ordered originaly. If it helps, the Vin # is 1MEBP793XGF609421.

The air dam that is on the car now is not a Mclaren air dam, it is a Ford Motor Sport air dam, therefore the lights may not be original either. I will check tonight to see if the wiring going to the lights looks factory and let you know.

I am still trying to learn all the unique features of these cars, so please bear with me. If I understand you correctly, the 86 verts did not come with a unique Mclaren front air dam. Therefore they would not have the lower valence on the sides or around the back either, is that correct?

I am asking this because I have a stock Capri front end for 1986, and if this is the correct front end I will be more motivated to dig it out of the attic and get it mounted on the car.

Yes.

From my FEEBLE understanding of verts:

1985 - The air dam/fog lights did not get installed from the factory. Often dealers or owners had them installed. I'm guessing Ford did not install the foglight wiring and switch. Who can confirm?

1986 - I have been told that the air dam was an "option". I never thought of it but I guess that they had to be ordered slightly differently with the foglight wiring and switch.

Sandy must be able to shed more light on this.

LOL I have always said "Any idiot can restore a Chevy........ but you realy have to know what you are doing to restore a Ford" or Mercury in this case ....LOL.......

I have a 1965 Mustang that was built in Nov. of 1964, therefore it has many leftover 1964 1/2 parts on it, and I have had to deal with 5 bolt vs 6 bolt bellhousings, 3 bolt vs 4 bolt lower crank pulley, 2 speed vs 3 speed heater fan........ So now Take a FoMoCo product and throw in an after market modification company like Mclaren and the variances increase exponentially.

I would guess the stock Mustang GT switch would be used. It mounts under the dash and has 2 studs. I installed one on an 86 and only found 1 mounting hole so I had to drill another from what I recall. These are easy to find on ebay for $5-10. There were of course Ford aftermarket fog light kits but I don't know what switch they came with. You can still find the kits on ebay NOS. Of course this is all for the Marchal lights. I don't know what was used on the McLarens.

On my 85 Mclaren convertible I had for a short time, it had dealer installed ground effects and foglights. The switch they used was a run of the mill switch you'd find at a auto parts store, the center of the button would light up when on. It was nothing like the factory switch on my coupes.

I have never actually (I know, hard to believe....) had the pleasure of eyeballing a 1986 Mercury Capri ascMcLaren 2-Seat Roadster WITH the 1986-only ascMcLaren COUPE ground effects, rear under bumper fascia air valance with dual exhaust cutouts and front ascMcLaren Coupe air dam with Hella Fog Lights, much less the fog light SWITCH. I wish I could have. Thjerefore I have NO clue what switch was used. I'd kinda guess they used the Factory OEM switch from a Capri RS ~

DaytonaTim, yes, the ground effects, air dam, rear under bumper fascia & foggies were a
MID YEAR option on the 1986 ascMcLaren SC Convertibles at $1,395.00. It was $1,395.00 (window sticker) on all of them, BUT selling dealerships were NOT invoiced the $1,395.00 on Silver, Dark Blue or Light Blue painted vehicles as a Spring Promotion, to "push" the new Paris Blue Metallic (Light); Atlantic Blue Metallic (Dark) or Platinum Silver Metallic. In addition, new for mid-year was Dark Charcoal (actually black) interior, whch joined the Sand Beige and or the Regatta Blue.

My '86 has the air dam. I never messed with the foglight switch, because the foglights do not work, and at this point, I cannot even remember where it is. I'll take a look at it when I get home.

The switch is a cheap looking thing mounted under the left side of the dash, almost directly under the pull-knob for the headlights. I took a photo of it, and will try to get it put on the site later today.
