I was talking about my Mclaren to a friend of mine, who is really big into building model cars, and it sparked a memory of his. Well he dug through his "model car boneyard" and came up with this kit that he bought back in the 90's.

I saw a date on the box, I believe it is on one of the end pics, that said 1981. I assume this was the date of the kit manufacture or design.
The box says Mustang.......Mustangs never got the wheelwell eyebrows did they?
It also says "TURBO" on it, but the picure of the engine is definately not turbocharged. The box did say the car on the box was of a prototype model so I guess the kit could be correct, I don't know since the box is still wrapped in plastic
Is this a model of a car that was actualy made?
Is it a model of a prototype Mclaren?
Or is just some modelers prediction of the 84-86 Mclarens?
What do yo guys think?

I think it was an artist's conception of what may or may not windup being inside.
Sandy passed away in 2012. He will be forever missed.

It's a model of the McLaren M81 Mustang. It's not a perfect replica since Revell pretty much used a lot of existing molds for the kit. The body mold is from their Capri RS Turbo kit so that is why for instance the fender flares are not as pronounced as they are on the real car.
The engine pictured on the side is of a turbo engine, it's the early draw-through style before the more efficient blow-through design was used when fuel injection arrived in 1983.
There are many pictures of this car in Tom's photo album.

There actually was a convertible model that I've been looking for for sometime. I was hoping to recreate my car off of it as best I could. I also bought a GMP Mustang sedan that I was considering figuring a way to resemble an ASC Mclaren convertible. I noticed GMP has been coming out with more fox style die cast cars, perhaps they will spoil us someday.
