changing quality of the interiors

Did the Mustang-era McLarens get better quality leather and other interior materials than the Capri-era cars? It seems like the vast majority of the Mustang-based cars that I see on ebay or elsewhere have interiors that are in markedly better shape.

My '86 is low mileage, but the interior just doesn't look so hot (though in my case, it appears to be due in part to the first owner having left the car out in the sun with the top down . . . a lot).

Convertibles take a real beating due to the weather, sun and of course the tops fail with time.
